Overnight in Central Cairns, Ramada, Queens Court or Similar.

Your waking up in North Queensland, Lets not miss a minute of this. Following breakfast we are off to catch a train.

Experience one of the most spectacular rail journeys in Australia, discovering the living colours and natural beauty of our heritage listed rainforest that is millions if years old.

This famous railway winds its way on a 2 hour journey from Cairns to Kuranda. Rising from sea level to 328m, the journey to Kuranda travels through World Heritage protected tropical rainforest, past beautiful and spectacular waterfalls and into the beautiful Barron Gorge.

The journey includes commentary and a map of Kuranda.

Upon reaching the village of Kuranda, with its rich assortment of interesting attractions and unique shopping experiences, stroll around and absorb the vibe.

Your coach will meet you where we will all board for the town of Herberton.

Prepare to be wowed as you step back in time to an era that has been long forgotten.

Herberton is an unusual town which is set on a ridge of the rolling hills of the Atherton Tablelands. Historically it was a tin town with both a mine and a smelter nearby.

The town came into existence in 1880 when a party of prospectors led by Willie Jack and John Newell discovered tin in the area. They named the settlement Herberton because it was at the headwaters of the Herbert River.

Here we will visit the Herberton Historic Village. A remarkable collection of over 60 buildings which is reputedly the largest collection of Australiana in Queensland. Its buildings include an old school, a coach and livery stable, a miner’s hut, a slab hut dating from 1870, a bank, a presbytery, a telephone exchange, a pub (which is a composite of a number of buildings) and many more.

Late afternoon take a stroll along the creek and you might be lucky to spot a platypus.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Overnight in the Yungaburra

Today we arise nice and early and head further inland.

Passing through the picturesque country, after lunch we will marvel in the surrounds of Copperfield Gorge which is the remnants of an ancient lava flow.

We continue on west towards Cobbold Gorge, an oasis like no other.

Breakfast lunch and dinner

Overnight will be at Cobbold or Finnigan’s Rest

An early start with a boat cruise up the Cobbold Gorge

Cobbold Gorge is a hidden oasis tucked away within the rugged sandstone formations. An ancient landscape which invites you to breathe in the bush and breathe out your worries. Located in North Queensland’s Gulf Savannah, this ancient geological landform is unique in its narrow sandstone formations and spectacular 30-foot cliffs. Cobbold is the youngest of Queensland’s gorges to visit, with a mere 10,000 years against its name, giving some indication of the deep history that Queensland’s Outback holds.

Tour the gorge on a custom-made, electric powered boat – quietly motored as not to disturb the gentle serenity of the natural ecosystems it passes. It glides across the surface mirroring the eerie silence of the Cobbold Gorge itself.  where you glide  How can this be any more perfect!!!!!

You may even spot one of the large population of resident freshwater crocodiles.

An award winning outback experience. How can this be any more perfect!!!!!

From here further west we go. Passing through Georgetown. Croydon and, what appears to be, endless lands until we reach Normanton.

Take the afternoon to explore, have a beer at the Purple pub and a photo with ‘Kyrs’ a spectacular 8.63m crocodile.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Overnight at Normanton

We are nearly there, the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Burke and Wills Camp 119

This is truly historic site being the final camp of the ill fated Melbourne to Gulf exploration. A visit to this remote site evokes the sense of isolation of the Burke and Wills expedition in 1861, which crossed Australia from south to north, and almost back again. This was the northernmost camp, number 119, established on 11 February 1861 near Bynoe Creek.

From here we travel to Mutton Hole wetlands conservation park. The largest continuous estuarine wetland aggregation of its type in Northern Queensland. While enjoying a picnic lunch take in the amazing birdlife and maybe spot a crocodile.

This afternoon we will find ourselves in Karumba, exotic tropical fishing port on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Karumba is a fishing destination and industrial port on the banks of the Norman River where, each winter, anglers from all over Australia arrive to try their luck in the fish-rich waters of the Gulf. Once it was nothing more than a small, sleepy outback town

Meals – Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Overnight again in Kurumba

Today we take a short break from the tour bus and venture by rail. We travel an hour SE to Normanton to meet up with the  Gulflander.

The Normanton to Critters camp railway line is a heritage-listed railway line in the Gulf Country of northern Queensland, Australia. Hear the history of the 16-mile turning angle built in 1891, and the true tales of how this little Gulf Savannah landscape got its unusual name. This is the only train to operate on the line operated by a Gardner diesel propelled rail motor and carriages TP1809 and TP1811.

After our historic rail journey we will join the comforts of the airconditioned coach once again and let our minds wonder back 190,000 years ago to the volcanic days of the east coast of Australia at the Undara Lava Caves.

Considered some of the largest and longest lava tubes on the planet, the Undara lava tubes, located in Undara Volcanic National Park in North Queensland, have led to the formation of some spectacular underground caves.

Thought to be formed by immense volcanic activity, during this fiery episode, twenty-three billion cubic litres of lava was estimated to have spewed forth from the Undara Volcano onto the surrounding Atherton Tableland.

Undara region offers guests a unique outback adventure. Staying here is not like checking into any other hotel, motel or resort. The accommodation puts you in the heart of the Australian Outback, providing an authentic escape into the bush with accommodation ranging from Cabins, Railway carriages and homesteads . There’s a few things you can be assured of, friendly hospitality and an array of native Australian plants and animals right on your doorstep, including but not limited to kangaroos, wallabies and kookaburras.

Meals – Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Overnight will be at Undara or Mount Surprise

The outback wakes early, then so shall we. After breakfast we make our way to the Undara Lava Tubes for a tour by an experienced Savannah guide.

The Undara experience delivers the essence of the Australia Outback from natural landscapes of rolling savannah plains and ancient lava tubes where we will take the Archway Explorer Lava Tube Tour.

An excellent concentrated visit to the lava tubes, plus other interesting environmental, geological and historical features pointed out and explained by your Savannah Guide throughout the trip to and from the tubes. Visits up to 3-sections of lava tubes. Easy fitness level with boardwalks and steps.

From here we will travel through the Atherton Tablelands, with its Rainforest, spectacular water- falls and peaceful lakes as well as a heritage listed 500-year-old Curtain Fig before arriving back into Cairns.
